I was raise on a small poultry farm down the hill from where I live now. I always said - When I grow up I will NEVER have chickens. Guess what - I got married and had two sons which end up being in the local county 4-H . My older son-Joshua has completed 4-H Rocketry, Swine and Poultry projects for Howard County. He grew up, finished high school and went to work, my younger son Nathaniel started out with goats for his 4H project then moved on to poultry.
Two years ago he quit 4H and began wrestling.
So needless to say I inherited the poultry. I started out with Nates remaining poultry - not many survived after predators in our area got hungry. I went through hatchery catalogs and started getting poultry magazines, bought new pullets and cockerels. I went to the Howard County Fair to show in Open class then continued on to the Maryland Poultry Show- Ok now I was hooked for sure.
I found a local breeder of a couple of different poultry breeds and went on from there. I decided I wanted to have poultry to get a basket full of different colored eggs, thats were I am at now, trying to breed my roasters to a few hens to get the colored eggs I want. Chocolate, speckled chocolate, blueish - greenish , brown and white eggs- I will show my hens and roasters in the Howard County Fair. Howard County Fair from August 6-13, 2011, then continue on to The Maryland State Poultry Fanciers Association Fair in November.
I own - Welsummers, Cuckoo Marans, White Leghorns, Ameraucana's and Marans.
I breed Ameraucana's, Welsummer's and Blue and Splash Marans.
